Materials Boot Camp for Simulation Users

Friday May 23, 2014 at 4:02pm
This blog has 6 very useful links to You Tube videos for anyone wanting to know the basics of material science and, in particular, any SOLIDWORKS users who want a refresher before attending a Simulation training course.

One of my colleagues reported to me that a customer was concerned that, since he had not had any formal mechanical engineering training, he might struggle with the theory of materials on our Simulation course. He wanted to know if we could run some simple mechanical engineering training on stress, strain, ductility, fatigue, failure etc.

We could do this, but there are a host of books available to cover these topics and, even better, there are some excellent resources on the internet. A quick Google search led me to a 'Boot Camp' on materials by Mega Mechatronics.

There are 6 short videos that explain very clearly (and with useful application examples) how stress and strain are calculated and how we use them in engineering calculations plus useful information on corrosion, heat treatment and surface finish. These are not replacements for formal education but are great introductions or refreshers.

I would strongly recommend the videos on stress and strain, ductility and toughness and failure analysis for people who are new to mechanical stress simulation.
