SOLIDWORKS Magnetic Mates

Magnetic Mates

Magnetic makes are used within SolidWorks assemblies to easily configure and position assembly components. Through defining connection points and ground plane(s) – position components through drag and dropping one component within close proximity of another to snap the asset into position.

Workflow for using Magnetic Mates:

1.      Use the Asset Publisher to define the connection points
2.      Define the Ground Plane in the assembly
3.      Insert components using the magnetic mates to snap into the desired positions

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Keyboard shortcuts are useful when working with magnetic mates to cycle through the various connection points. Use the left bracket: ‘[‘ to cycle through the connection points associated with the moving component or the right bracket ‘]’ to cycle through the static components connection points. (These keyboard shortcuts can be customised via the system options).

Tips to consider when working with complex set ups:

1.      Adjust the magnetic mate proximity through the system options (under performance). Making the proximity smaller will mean that the component must be dragged within closer vicinity of another component for the magnetic mate to snap into position.
2.      Turn off magnetic mate pre-alignment, this option controls the magnetic mate snapping behaviour.
3.      Lock magnetic mates – this will prevent one component from disconnecting from another, they will remain fixed and be positioned together.
4.      Magnetic mates can be used with SpeedPak configurations.

These tips for working with complex setups will aid with the overall performance of SolidWorks and assist with easily using magnetic mates to snack complex geometry together.

New to SolidWorks 2019:

In SolidWorks 2019 you can now be use magnetic mates in Large Design Review mode. Through the Large Design Review mode, you can view both the Ground Plane and Published Reference folders. Additionally, you are able to create, edit and delete Ground Plane features but cannot edit the published references.
