Why SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional?
SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional can be used company-wide as a document management system for SOLIDWORKS CAD data as well as any other internal documentation.

Learn about workflows, project structuring, variable mapping and template creation which would then be applied to configure the behind the scenes set up of the PDM Professional system. This course is structured towards the administration side of the software rather than the front end use- although an overview of this is discussed.

PREREQUISITES
  • A sound knowledge of the Windows explorer environment
  • A basic knowledge of the SOLIDWORKS user interface is useful but not a requirement
  • This course is aimed at the person(s) who will be managing/ administrating the PDM system within the organisation.

The course covered al of the essential elements of PDM, the tutor tailored the course to suit the students attending and added some real life examples.
Each individual part of the PDM set up[ was covered, but at times it was difficult or see where they fitted into the overall picture, some flowcharts for example may have helped.

Alan, who delivered the training, was very knowledgeable and delivered it very clearly and at a good pace, he was excellent. The course content covered a large number of topics within PDM broken down into manageable sections with each building on the last.

Tom went through the course at an easy to follow speed, gave useful hints and extra pointers when he felt the need to. He allowed time for you to find and correct your own mistakes made in the exercises, giving a hint here and there if necessary. He also took into account a company specific situation and pointed out areas most suitable for change. Did not just leave us to our own devices at lunch and remained engaging with us all day, overall he was an enjoyable and gracious host.

Tom was very helpful and clearly well-rehearsed in the field of SolidWorks PDM. He took us through the course material at good pace and offered to answer any questions we had at any time. He was also very conscious about us not feeling overwhelmed by the large intake of information by offering breaks at regular intervals, and sat with us at lunch to answer any other questions and provide advice from his experiences. He also took some interest into what our companies do and often provided tips using PDM that may aid our company structure. There was also some opportunity to ask questions at the end of each day and request further support on our individual vault/admin tool setups if requested.

Suggested additions to the course:

I understand that as far as the admin training goes, virtually everything can be handled on Windows Explorer or the Admin Tool. However, in my experience, I strongly believe that actually using SolidWorks a lot more in our case studies and exe

The trainer (Tom) went at a very reasonable pace and ensured that everyone had understood each topic despite a fairly large group, but was able to cover all of the information in the book within the 3 days of the course, and still had additional time for asking questions and fixing issues at the end. He also tailored certain areas of the course to relate to what people were attending the course for (eg. migrating from Workgroup) and went into additional detail on areas which were unclear.

The course itself was well structured and I felt confident at the end of it that I had understood how the PDM system fits together and how it is built up from all of the individual components, offering a large degree of customisation and functionality.

Thanks for your feedback. The instructor who lead this event is part of our PDM team and has considerable experience with the PDM product and further aspects of API. After discussing the event with him I feel that some of the questions asked of him were beyond the course content and although we will always try to answer all questions raised we must recognise that there is a set agenda with key topics that need to be covered. Out of fairness to other attendees, some questions may have been noted and dealt with at the end of the course to keep the course moving along and relevant to all those attending the event. In relation to video learning, this is something we have traditionally steered away from as it is felt that it would deprive attendees of the opportunity to ask additional questions and furthermore when something does go wrong, and you need additional guidance, there is no one around to help. We are investigating the possibility of adding additional eLearning resources which specifically follow up on the course content, however this resource would be intended to support the physical classroom course, not to replace it.
